Golf and Population Health

Golf is as an accessible sport that offers health enhancing physical activity, and physical health, mental health and longevity benefits across all age groups and ability levels. Through the combination of physical activity, social interaction, green space and outdoor engagement, golf provides a comprehensive approach to improving both physical and mental well-being. This course will explore the various health benefits of golf participation, examining how this lifetime sport contributes to cardiovascular and metabolic health, muscle strength, cognitive function, and psychological wellness.

Dr Andrew Murray

Andrew’s PhD investigated golf and it’s health benefits. He has worked for the Scottish Government in health, and sport policy. He is a medical doctor (general practitioner and sport and exercise medicine physician). Andrew is an honorary professor at Liverpool John Moores, is faculty on International Olympic Committee sports medicine and physio courses, and has >130 peer reviewed publications, >100 international and national plenary presentations and has provided advisory to governments on sport and health from his base at the University of Edinburgh. He was awarded a Point of Light award by the UK Prime Minister for promoting the health benefits of physical activity. He is a medical and scientific adviser for The R&A, and works with other leading golf organisations.
